Pentagon Labels Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk
The Pentagon has labeled Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company declined unrestricted access to its Claude models for fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance. Anthropic refused to provide unrestricted API access for autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. The DoD has since signed deals with seven of Anthropic's rivals — OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services — for deploying AI systems within classified networks. Anthropic says it will not build weapons or conduct mass surveillance, standing by its usage policies. CEO Dario Amodei confirmed the company turned down Pentagon contracts over these red lines.
Community divided. Praise for Anthropic's principled stand on weapons/surveillance. Some frustrated by the business impact and DoD relationship loss. Others view it as a long-term brand positive.
